Lisa's Story

In Oct. '07, at age 47, I was diagnosed with 2 uterine fibroids. This was after I finally made an appointment with my OB/GYN. I had skipped a few years of annual visits. My periods were out of control and seemed to control my life. I was planning my activities, vacations, my life around my period! I wore black pants everyday during my cycle because it was inevitable that I would leak. I spent a lot of time in the bathroom and a lot of money purchasing pads and tampons. I would start to bloat and have cramping about two weeks prior to my period. I looked pregnant! When it would start, the cramping was terrible, sometimes it felt like labor contractions. I could practically time them! I also had to urinate frequently. My legs would ache terribly, to the point it was hard to walk very far.

I was referred to Dr. Cockerill. I met with him and he explained the whole procedure, ordered some tests and I was scheduled for the procedure. Everything was just like he said it would be. The procedure itself did not take very long, but the pain pump afterward came in handy. I received excellent care at the short stay unit of Sentara Va. Beach. Dr. Cockerill was always available while I was in the hospital. The recovery at home was 2 weeks, and after that I was back to my usual busy life, working full-time, as well as part-time as a dance instructor.

The healing process has been ongoing. About 4 months after the procedure, I definitely felt like I had turned the corner. Now at eight months after the UFE, my period is very normal. I no longer dread it. I can wear any color pants during my cycle! I no longer look bloated or pregnant, even during my period. Now I only run to the bathroom 1 or 2 times while at work. I only have mild cramping; not even bad enough to take a pain reliever.

Dr. Cockerill is a wonderful doctor. He is very easy to talk to, remembers who you are, and takes his time with you as a patient. There is never a waiting room full of other patients, so he does not rush you along.

I highly recommend UFE if you are a candidate. It WILL give you your life back every month. Thank you, Dr. Cockerill!
